100 Common Mistakes In English (6-10)

6. Saw vs Seen (Past Tense)

Penjelasan: "Saw" adalah bentuk lampau kedua (Verb 2) yang berdiri sendiri. Sedangkan "Seen" adalah bentuk ketiga (Verb 3) yang harus didahului kata kerja bantu seperti have, has, atau had. Jangan gunakan "seen" sendirian untuk menceritakan masa lalu.

Contoh Kalimat:

  • I saw a beautiful sunset at the beach yesterday.
  • We saw that movie together last week.
  • He saw his teacher at the supermarket.

7. We were vs We was

Penjelasan: Dalam Past Tense, kata bantu (to be) harus sesuai dengan jumlah subjek. "Was" digunakan untuk subjek tunggal (I, He, She, It). "Were" digunakan untuk subjek jamak atau orang kedua (You, We, They).

Contoh Kalimat:

  • We were very happy to see you again.
  • They were late for the meeting this morning.
  • You were the best player on the team.

8. The team plays well (Collective Nouns)

Penjelasan: Kata benda kolektif seperti Team, Family, atau Class biasanya dianggap sebagai satu kesatuan tunggal (singular). Oleh karena itu, kata kerjanya harus ditambah akhiran -s (dalam Present Tense) dan gunakan "well" (adverb) untuk menjelaskan cara mereka bermain.

Contoh Kalimat:

  • The team plays much better under the new coach.
  • My family lives in a small village.
  • The class listens carefully to the teacher.

9. Everybody is vs Everybody are

Penjelasan: Kata ganti tidak tentu (Indefinite Pronouns) seperti Everybody, Everyone, Someone, dan Nobody selalu dianggap tunggal secara tata bahasa, meskipun merujuk pada banyak orang. Maka, gunakan to be "is" atau "was".

Contoh Kalimat:

  • Everybody is invited to the party.
  • Is everyone ready to go now?
  • Nobody knows the answer to that question.

10. Doesn't vs Don't

Penjelasan: Untuk kalimat negatif dalam Present Tense, gunakan "Doesn't" khusus untuk subjek orang ketiga tunggal (He, She, It atau nama orang tunggal). Gunakan "Don't" untuk subjek I, You, We, They.

Contoh Kalimat:

  • She doesn't want to eat spicy food.
  • He doesn't have a car to go to work.
  • It doesn't look like it's going to rain.
