The Urgency of Using Reason in Islam
Opening
Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
All praise is due to Allah SWT, the Lord of the universe, who has created mankind in the best form and blessed us with faith, knowledge, and intellect. Peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad SAW, his family, companions, and all Muslims who follow his teachings until the Day of Judgment.
Honorable teachers, beloved friends, and respected audience,
Today, I would like to deliver a speech entitled “The Urgency of Using Reason in Islam.”
Content
Dear brothers and sisters,
One of the greatest blessings that Allah SWT has given to human beings is العقل or reason. Through reason, humans can think, understand, analyze, and distinguish between right and wrong. Unlike other creatures, humans are honored with intellect so that they can seek truth and fulfill their responsibilities as servants of Allah SWT.
Islam highly encourages Muslims to use their minds wisely. In many verses of the Holy Qur’an, Allah commands people to think, reflect, observe, and understand the signs of His creation. Allah SWT says:
This verse teaches us that Muslims should think deeply about nature and the universe. Everything created by Allah contains lessons and wisdom for those who use their intellect.
Islam is not a religion that opposes science or critical thinking. On the contrary, Islam encourages people to seek knowledge and use reason responsibly. Through reason, humans can develop science, technology, medicine, and civilization while still remaining obedient to Allah SWT.
Dear audience,
Reason plays an important role in daily life. Without reason, people can easily be deceived by false information, negative influences, and harmful behavior. By using our intellect wisely, we can make good decisions and avoid actions that damage ourselves and others.
Allah SWT also criticizes people who refuse to think and blindly follow ignorance. Allah says in the Qur’an:
أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ
This phrase appears repeatedly in the Qur’an, showing how important thinking and understanding are in Islam. Muslims are encouraged to reflect before acting and to base decisions on knowledge and wisdom.
Prophet Muhammad SAW also demonstrated the importance of wisdom and intelligence in solving problems. He was known as a wise leader, a trustworthy person, and an excellent example for humanity. His life teaches Muslims to combine faith with intelligence.
Dear brothers and sisters,
However, Islam also teaches that reason has limits. Human intellect is powerful, but it is not perfect. Therefore, reason must always be guided by revelation from Allah SWT. If reason is separated from faith, people may become arrogant and misuse knowledge for evil purposes.
Nowadays, we live in the modern era where information spreads quickly through technology and social media. Unfortunately, not all information is true. Therefore, Muslims must think critically and verify information before believing or sharing it.
Islam teaches balance between intellect and spirituality. A smart Muslim is not only intelligent academically but also has good morals, humility, honesty, and strong faith. Intelligence without morality can lead to corruption, injustice, and destruction.
By using reason properly, Muslims can contribute positively to society. Scientists, teachers, doctors, leaders, and students all need wisdom and critical thinking to solve problems and improve human life.
Throughout history, many Muslim scholars used their intellect to contribute greatly to the world. Scholars such as Ibn Sina in medicine, Al-Khawarizmi in mathematics, and Ibn Rushd in philosophy became examples of Muslims who combined faith and reason harmoniously.
Dear friends,
As young Muslims, we should use our minds to seek knowledge, improve ourselves, and strengthen our faith. We should avoid laziness, blind imitation, and negative influences. Instead, we must become thoughtful, wise, and responsible individuals.
Closing
In conclusion, reason is one of Allah’s greatest gifts to humanity. Islam strongly encourages Muslims to think, reflect, and seek knowledge. By using reason together with faith, humans can achieve success in this world and the hereafter.
Let us become Muslims who are intelligent, critical, wise, and guided by Islamic values.
Thank you very much for your attention.
Wassalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.
